 马奇夫人（劳拉·邓恩 Laura Dern 饰）有着四个如花似玉的女儿，大女儿梅格（艾玛·沃森 Emma Watson 饰）拥 有着美丽的外表，和对于爱情的天真憧憬。二女儿乔（西尔莎·罗南 Saoirse Ronan 饰）满脑子塞着古灵精怪的念头，整天拿着蘸水笔东写西写，她的故事在全家上下都受到了热烈的欢迎。三女儿艾米（佛罗伦斯·珀 Florence Pugh 饰）渴望成为一名画家。最小的女儿贝斯（伊莱扎·斯坎伦 Eliza Scanlen 饰）虽然个性比起三个姐姐要来的内向的多，却拥有杰出的音乐天赋。在马奇夫人的教导之下，四个姑娘渐渐成长为了拥有独立人格的杰出女性，她们热情、乐观、善良，每个人都在各自的道路上坚强而又坚定的前进着。

　　故事发生在1865年的法国南部，流浪汉狄默提（纳威尔·佩雷兹·毕斯卡亚特 Nahuel Pérez Biscayart 饰）来到了这里，为了避人耳目，他假装自己是聋哑人，在这里的一座小村庄中住了下来。在村子里，狄默提邂逅了名为约瑟芬（伊希尔·勒·贝斯柯 Isild Le Besco 饰）的女子，美丽善良的约瑟芬一下子就吸引了狄默提的注意。　　约瑟芬的父亲休斯（让-克劳德·古卢姆伯格 Jean-Claude Bolle-Reddat 饰）是一个热情好客的男人，他慷慨的邀请狄默提来家里做客，可休斯的善意却并没有得到狄默提的回报。狄默提用一种古老而又邪恶的方法催眠的约瑟芬，将她带进深山老林之中肆意凌辱。

　　Following the sudden and mysterious death of their father, a brother and sister return home to their sprawling New Orleans estate and encounter their unhinged stepmother, who will stop at nothing to gain control of their inheritance.

　　In a small rural community local police officers Zoe and Patrick begin their shift as normal but it soon becomes clear that something is wrong. Strange events unfold before their eyes, residents begin behaving strangely and mass suicide panic spreads amongst the community they are trying to protect. Zoe and Patrick realise they are under siege from alien machines as they become cut off from the outside world. They are forced to do battle against these uninvited visitors. With the help of some of the residents Zoe and Patrick begin unravelling the mystery and soon discover it is not all as it seems.
