树叶已经开始变了，但乔纳森·鲁斯特教授对即将到来的学期仍然准备不足。本周末，他正在为考古系的野外工作课程寻找合适的地点。在同行学者和雇工的帮助下，该团队在拂晓时分出发。这次旅行为乔纳森提供了一个难得的机会，让他亲自动手，成功可能意味着出版，也可能意味着终身教职。当一名助教神秘失踪时，探险队很快就脱轨了。很快，这群人发现自己处于现实和来世的交汇处，陷入了令人难忘的疯狂之中。
